J.J. Spaun Earns His First Win at the Valero Texas Open
J.J. Spaun continued the common theme of first-time winners over the weekend by winning the Valero Texas Open and punching his ticket to the Masters this week. A final round of 69 held off Matt Kuchar and made Spaun the first player since Tiger Woods at the 2008 U.S. Open to win after starting the round with a double bogey. Besides Jordan Spieth, that makes it five of the last six years at the Valero Texas Open that someone won this event to make their way into the Masters. This event was J.J.’s 147th start in 15 years of playing on tour and this win will certainly change his life.
Jennifer Kupcho Wins The Chevron Championship
The first Major of the LPGA season, The Chevron Championship, was held this past weekend with Jennifer Kupcho taking home the win for her first career LPGA title. At one point, she held a seven-shot lead before heading into the back nine where she ended the round making five bogeys but still taking the win by two shots over Jessica Korda. Seeing Kupcho win her first event at a major tournament was exciting for all of the golf but we would have loved to see her put on the accelerator and win by the large margin that she held early in the round. This was the last time that this event will be played at Mission Hills because of Chevron’s decision to move this tournament to the location of their world headquarters in Houston and it was a bittersweet end to a great era.

16 Year Old, Anna Davis Wins the Augusta National Women’s Amateur
While the LPGA was hosting their first major of the year, Anna Davis, a bucket hat sporting, 16-year-old, was putting on a clinic at the ANWA where she ended up winning by one shot over Ingrid Lindblad and Lattana Stone. Anna is an incredible young player and we are looking forward to seeing where her career will take her shortly. Golf fans left their comments of disapproval about this tournament being held on the same week as the Chevron Championship as the two tournaments battled each other for storylines and coverage. Unfortunately, the timing of these events takes away from Anna Davis’ and Jennifer Kupcho’s impressive wins but with a little adjustment, the future of these events is very bright and it’s all-around great for golf.
